Played in the mini-series by: Rob Lowe Nick Andros didn't have an easy life. His father was killed months before Nick was born, in a car accident his parents were in while en route to a doctor appointment. It is implied that this accident caused fetal injuries to Nick which resulted in him being born deaf and mute. After his mother died at the age of 9, Nick was sent to an orphanage where he was bullied by the other children. By the time the Super Flu reached it's heights, Nick was a 22 year old drifter working odd jobs where he could find them. Being alone in a wholly destroyed world he eventually made his way to Mother Abagail's home. From there they all travel to Boulder where Nick is a member of the Free Zone committee. If Mother Abagail is the group's spiritual compass, then Nick is their mental compass and silent (no pun intended) leader. Playing a deaf/mute character would no doubt be harder than it sounds, but Joseph Gordon-Levitt has the right skill set to pull it off. An actor since the age of 7, Gordon-Levitt has literally grown up before your very eyes. He has an unassuming air about him and a serene innocence. Gordon-Levitt, even at the age of 33, still has the look of the boy next door, much how Nick Andros is described in The Stand. The ability to deliver calm and even performances as well as projecting a self assuredness would help him bring Nick Andros to life.
A self professed Stephen King/Star Wars geek and pop culture neophyte, Scott tends to spend much of his time alone pondering life's greatest mysteries.....he also depends heavily on his son Liam, a great sounding board, to set him straight on Star Wars issues and gives him advice on what EXACTLY he's doing wrong.
