10 Performances That Could Save Upcoming Movies
3. Taron Egerton - Rocketman

After the great success of Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman looks to continue a potential new trend of making biopics centered around larger-than-life musicians, this time on the great Sir Elton John. Directed by Bryan Singer's late-production replacement Dexter Fletcher, Rocketman will likely follow the same approach as BR as it weaves through John's struggles and triumphs.
Fletcher and leading man Taron Egerton worked together in the past on the supremely-underrated Eddie the Eagle, with Egerton giving a performance far different from his Kingsman counterpart, helping illustrate his range. Fletcher was able to get that out of him and if Rocketman hopes to have any chance of working where Bohemian didn't, it'll be up to the both of them to make this movie soar. It's unclear where Fletcher's work on BR began or how much contribution he had in total, so it's not clear how much he can be praised or criticized for the film. So, just like how Rami Malek saved BR from being incredibly bland, Egerton will have to ensure Rocketman can be more than just a retelling of John's Wikipedia backstory.
He's certainly capable of it and already has Sir Elton's blessing, so a strong start so far. Here's hoping this story about a man whose talent and persona was unlike any other can have a finished product (and leading performance) that follows suit.
