10 Pointless Characters In Horror Movie Sequels

4. Cotton Weary - Scream 3

The Scream series is known for its fantastic openings. From the infamous slaying of Drew Barrymore in the original to the meta and reality-bending murders in Scream 4, they are often the best bit of their respective movies.

Scream 3's opening is unique. It introduces us to the central gimmick of the movie, that of Ghostface's voice changer, and features a key character from the previous entries, Cotton Weary.

Up until this point, the character of Cotton has been anything but pointless. He is a key player in Scream 2, acting as a red herring for the narrative, as we are lead to believe that he could be the killer.

In Scream 3, however, his inclusion is totally worthless. While his death in the opening does introduce the audience to Ghostface's voice changer, it doesn't make any difference to the narrative that he is the one being killed to show it off. It could have been anyone.

By needlessly killing Cotton, the series is stripped of a strong central character, and is no better for it.
