The fact that a major Hollywood studio has yet to monetise the immensely popular Masters of the Universe brand is something of a surprise, especially after the likes of Transformers and GI Joe have proven to be financial successes. Sony are apparently desperate to get the film made and a script penned by the writers of Predators is the one they are trying to push into production. John Woo was at one point attached to direct but given his record in Hollywood, it's probably a good thing he went back to Hong Kong to make Red Cliff. The director of Kung-Fu Panda also became associated with the project, in what seemed to be an attempt to emulate Brad Bird's success on Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol but nothing came of that either. The latest developments seem to suggest that production is not that far off from happening with Jon M Chu attached to direct. To bring the much loved 80's phenomenon to screen, you would hope for someone with more pedigree than Chu as his previous involvement in action cinema with GI Joe: Retaliation was awful. Despite suffering because of the absymal 1987 Masters of the Universe adaptation starring Dolph Lundgren, a re-imagining doesn't seem far away from escaping development hell.
