10 Radical Ideas To Save The DC Extended Universe
2. Amp Up The Multiverse
It’s one of the major things the DC Universe has going for it: the concept of the multiverse, the theory of parallel worlds, as one of the core precepts of their shared continuity.
Geoff Johns has already indicated that they’re using a version of the multiverse with the live action DC adaptations: the television universe represented by the CW shows Arrow, Legends Of Tomorrow and The Flash is supposed to be a separate parallel universe to the DC characters represented in the movies, and it seems that the parallel world represented in the Supergirl TV series will be joining the Arrowverse continuity now that the show has moved to the CW.
There’s a school of thought that says that the ‘Knightmare’ sequence in Batman Vs. Superman is a vision, not of the future, but of a parallel world in which Superman and Darkseid rule Earth together with an iron fist. Snyder has already fuelled speculation that the Flash who comes to Bruce Wayne in that dream sequence is the Flash of another world.
That’s all fine and dandy, but I want to see my multiversal weirdness amped up to eleven. Let’s see the Knightmare Batman come to this universe for help, following in the footsteps of their Flash. Let’s see other versions of legendary DC superheroes and villains come out from other worlds: in the comics, for example, we’ve seen heroic versions of the Joker and Lex Luthor.
Let’s see that Superman versus this Superman, with our version in his Clark Kent persona. If it takes place in a junkyard, it can pay tribute to the single greatest scene in cinema history: the set-piece from Superman III where an evil Superman fights a heroic Clark Kent for the soul of Kal-El.
