10 Real Reasons Why Man Of Steel Was A Failure

3. It Achieves Most Of Its Joy And Inspiration Through Drama

Contrary to what the Christopher Reeve movies may convey€”and incidentally, what many people also deplore about the character in question here today€”Superman, as we've accepted with most other fictional narratives across genres, does not have to be tongue-in-cheek and happy-go-lucky to be a positive, beautiful story. There are lines in between, and Man of Steel is just that. It's nuanced. Man of Steel does have many great outright humorous moments, but like any "normal" movie€”you know, those ones that non-geeks go to€”we feel happy and inspired through the drama of good characters, from the scenes between Clark and Jor-El, to the first reunion of Clark with Martha Kent, to the final moments between Clark and the World Engine. Man of Steel doesn't take itself too seriously as a blockbuster movie. It's just a movie, with care given to dialogue and direction that we would have been able to respect just fine in other genres. We're supposed to be the experts on this stuff, aren't we? Why is only Superman forbidden from the gray areas of emotion?
