One important area that the MCU is beginning to improve on is diversity of films. In 2018, the Marvel released Black Panther, a film which improved the franchise's representations of African and African-American backgrounds by huge strides. In the following year, Marvel then released their first female-lead superhero movie, Captain Marvel.

Considering Black Widow has been involved in the MCU since Iron Man 2, it remains very surprising that the female Avenger has not been rewarded with a solo film until now. Sure, in the past, female superhero films had often flopped, but recent box office successes of Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman has provided evidence of a market for female-lead superhero movies.

Marvel are not short on talented actresses to star as a leading actress. Scarlett Johansson has grossed over $10 billion from her films, which makes her the third-highest grossing box office name. Additionally, she has provided constantly high performances throughout the MCU, which has led to the demand for a solo film. This movie has been overdue but hopefully this will lead to future female lead films, considering the talented actresses Marvel already have at their disposal.
