10 Reasons The Fault In Our Stars Is The Best Book-Film Adaptation In Years

4. It's Willing To Make Cuts Where They Are Needed

It's not all love for John Green's story in the film version of The Fault In Our Stars. As with any successful book to film transfer, some of the fat must be trimmed in order to make the story work on the big screen. Boone and his scripting duo have managed to make the necessary cuts absolutely seamlessly, with the film's two hours happily falling away without any sense of either literary flab or unnecessary exercises in brevity. Of course, some scenes are missing, including one which was actually filmed with a cameo from John Green himself. These moments provided emotional colour in the novel, but are not an essential part of the film's story machine. The ability to decide what stays in and what ends up on the cutting room floor is an essential skill for anyone adapting a novel. It's something that the team behind The Fault In Our Stars got absolutely right.
