8. Its The Opposite Of Classic Disney
The Emperors New Groove was never supposed to be made. instead, Empire Of The Sun, an epic musical was originally meant to exist in its place. This initial idea was, among other things, stereotypical Disney, with a love story at its heart and no distinctive identity. After a troubled production, the idea was scrapped in favour of the buddy comedy we received. The result was a litany of classic Disney tropes being spun on their heads. There was no love story, an unlikable hero and a clear focus on comedy above all else. It didnt fit into the mold that audiences were used to, but thats exactly why it worked. Kingdom Of The Sun could have been a decent movie, but its hard to its derivative nature actually causing it to stand out from so many similar Disney films. By eschewing these traditional qualities, The Emperors New Groove carved out its own identity, one which was voraciously devoured its devoted fans.
