7. An Actual Sense Of Despair

Some of the saddest moments in film history have come from Disney. Who can forget Mufasa getting trampled, or Dumbo being separated from his mother? No, Disney€™s never had a problem conjuring tears, but one emotion it doesn€™t often tap into is despair. Classic Disney is adept at showcasing singular moments of sadness but The Emperor€™s New Groove, amidst all of its light-hearted humour, really manages to sell a complete absence of hope. Kuzco separated from Pacha, crying in the rain is a real moment of catharsis, one not brought about by a death, but simply by an internal awakening. Likewise, Pacha trying to tell his family that their home is meant to be levelled comes across like a hard-to-watch moment because of how real and relatable his struggle is. The film handles adult emotions better than most and the fact that it even so briefly becomes so dark speaks to how well-crafted and emotional the film is. By including these brief forays into Kuzco€™s sou and Pacha's family, the happiness that they finds at the end is all the more impressive and truly feels earned. Speaking of that ending...
