10 Reasons Why Star Trek: First Contact Ruined the Borg

6. Bloodbath

Picard was rescued from the Borg and the implants removed. In Voyager, Seven of Nine was rescued from the Borg and had her implants removed. In €œI, Borg€, Third of Five achieved individuality, even taking on the name €œHugh.€ There would be none of this wanton humanity displayed in First Contact, however. No, in this film Picard, upon seeing an assimilated crew member---shoots him. That€™s right, kill shot right to the chest. Later, another assimilated crew member is gunned down by Jean "Rambo" Picard on the holodeck---a man Picard coldly refers to as Ensign Lynch. Ignoring established canon again---First Contact seems to have forgotten that human beings can be rescued after having been assimilated. They also seem to have forgotten the stun setting. This is beyond a plot hole or discontinuity---this is the flat out rape of what made Star Trek so special to begin with. Gene Roddenberry envisioned a society that would solve problems with peaceful intellect rather than brute force. Now, I€™ll grant you that Gene himself isn€™t likely to have had the Borg in mind, but the fact remains that Star Trek at its core has always been about peace and a utopian society. What we€™re given in First Contact has none of this intact. It has become a sad imitation of a Star Trek film with only a small portion of the original ideas and vision intact. I€™m sure Gene spun in his grave at this offering.
