7. Time Travel
I wont mention how overdone Time Travel is in Sci-Fi---much less
Star Trek in general. No. Instead well talk about how the time travel aspect of this film is completely unnecessary and ruins the motives of the Borg. First of all, as has already been mentioned, the Borg assimilates a race for their technology in an effort to achieve ultimate perfection. With that in mind, what sense does it make for them to travel into the past to assimilate humanity at a period of inferior technology? In fact, what sense does it make for them to assimilate humanity before they discovered warp drive? Even if we forgive this oversight, however (Im being very generous in my forgiveness of this film so far, so why not?) if the Borg wanted to go back in time to stop the formation of the Federation, why travel all the way to Earth? Why not time travel in the Delta Quadrant and then travel to Earth when no one can detect what they are doing? The time travel element is not organic to the plot of this film and effectively splits the movie into two separate films that barely tie together at the end. It comes across as simply a failed attempt to cash in on a plot device that made
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (arguably) the most successful film in the franchise.
