10 Recent Horror Movie Endings Nobody Can Agree On
9. The Gorge
Scott Derrickson's The Gorge is a relatively divisive film on the whole, though never more so than in its final 20-ish minutes.
After Derrickson rather nimbly melds a sci-fi premise with a rom-com two-hander between Levi (Miles Teller) and Drasa (Anya Taylor-Joy), and then takes a sharp turn into horror territory around the mid-way point, the ending feels decidedly more pedestrian.
Because dealing with the monstrous entities inside the gorge isn't enough, the finale additionally sees our heroes battling an overarching human antagonist, Bartholemew (a thoroughly wasted Sigourney Weaver) and a looming nuclear detonation.
And then there's the final scene, where a separated Levi and Drasa are reunited and smooch in a distinctly The Bourne Identity-esque epilogue, which some viewers have characterised as corny and at odds with the established tone.
But not everyone is quite so cynical or fed up of happy endings, it seems, as for many the romantic reconciliation felt earned due to how much time the movie spent investing audiences in Levi and Drasa's blossoming feelings.
