Lars von Trier's grand return to the Cannes Film Festival was in true von Trier fashion an incredibly brutal and strangely captivating serial killer motion picture that played to the director's provocative sensibilities. It may not as be uniquely impactful as his other work but star Matt Dillon's incredible performance is a genre classic.

The Danish filmmaker's opus follows Jack (Dillon), an architect whose failed career led to him becoming a serial killer and the audience is taken through his journey to murder through his narrations to a poet named Verge (based on the Roman poet Virgil - the movie is inspired by and serves as commentary on Dante's Inferno).

The narration serves a fourth wall-breaking mirror to the audience, both immersing it in Jack's absolutely revolting actions and chastising it for following said actions. Some may see it as a pretentious act of mocking viewers for relishing in stylized violence (and its polarizing critical reception indicates that this is the case), but there is no denying that this is a singular and provocative cinematic experience.
