10 Recent Monster Movies Better Than Godzilla: King Of The Monsters
1. Life (2017)
Astronauts aboard the International Space Station are on the cutting edge of one of the most important discoveries in human history: the first evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars.
As members of the crew conduct their research, the rapidly evolving life-form proves far more dangerous than anyone could have imagined.
While each actor gives a solid performance in the role they are given, the main star of the film is the director. As the film starts, you get a quick sense of how the film is going to feel and look. The director has a great sense for the claustrophobic feel that a film like Life should have.
Not only is the film beautifully directed, but the set design and visual effects are also stunning. The CGI elements, most notably the alien, are really up to par. The alien has a nice design that continues to grow and adapt throughout the film, becoming more sinister with every frame.
What Life does better than Godzilla, is that there is actually an element of suspense as we watch the "alien" slowly grow, and become more malevolent. The threat to the crew also seems more real than the threat in Godzilla, as the astronauts scramble to find safe places and offensive vantage points in such limited space.
Godzilla doesn't appear in Godzilla: King of Monsters until after the first 45-minutes, taking away from our much wanted monster screen time. At least in Life we're introduced to the monster from the very beginning, and not forced to sit through what felt like hours of meandering (and pointless) scenes and dialogue to get to that point.
