7. Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget - The Cast Changes
2023's sequel to Aardman's brilliant Chicken Run arrived with a fair bit of controversy, owing to the strange decision to recast several key characters. To be fair, the original voice actor for Fowler, Benjamin Whitrow, had sadly passed away by this time and no-one can blame Aardman for not wanting to invite Mel Gibson back to voice Rocky, given his many personal controversies.
Having said that, the other re-castings made absolutely no sense. Nick and Fetcher, the rats, were recast even though original voice actors Timothy Spall and Phil Daniels are still thriving, and worst of all, Julia Sawalha was replaced because it was decided that she now sounded 'too old'. She was then replaced with Thandiwe Newton, an actress who's a whopping total of four years younger than Sawalha - just ludicrous.
What makes this all even more inexplicable is that several of the other original actors came back. But did it harm the film?
Well, not too much. Thandiwe Newton fell a bit flat as Ginger, but that's more because Sawalha was so great in the role that anyone else was likely to feel like a pale imitation. Otherwise, Zachary Levi (Rocky), David Bradley (Fowler), and Romesh Ranganathan and Daniel Mays (as the rats) did admirable work in their parts, and the film itself, though not nearly as good as the original, was plenty of fun overall.
