10 Recent Movie Choices That Pissed Off The Fans
6. Peter Pan & Wendy - Reimagining The Story
Peter Pan & Wendy did not go down well with audiences at all, and while this isn't exactly surprising - it's not a particularly successful film overall - it could be argued that fans criticized the movie for the wrong reasons.
Alongside the usual suspects bashing the film for daring to have a more outspoken, assertive Wendy Darling (Ever Anderson) and for daring to have a racially diverse cast (1990's Hook had a multi-racial crew of Lost Boys, no-one complains about that!), many disliked the way that the story was reimagined. More specifically, the notion of Peter Pan (Alexander Maloney) as a hero is deconstructed and Pan himself is portrayed as a real jerk, while Captain Hook (Jude Law), here revealed as a former Lost Boy, is more sympathetic.
For your writer, this was the best thing about the movie. For starters, if Disney is going to insist on a remake nobody wants, the least they can do is add some new dimensions to the story. And as for the depiction of Peter Pan, he's always been a colossal d**k. He's not the good guy, he's a cautionary tale of what happens when you're incapable of growing the hell up. At the very least, this movie takes steps to acknowledge how unpleasant he is - something that the original film failed to do.
The film deserves to be criticized for its ugly visuals and tonally confused script, but not necessarily for the things that were raised in many fan critiques.
