3. The Platform 2

Spanish thriller The Platform became a major word-of-mouth hit when it released on Netflix at the onset of the pandemic in March 2020, its tantalisingly socially conscious premise and emphasis on isolation making it catnip for audiences who were sheltering in place at home.

This context also made the film feel like something of a lightning-in-a-bottle success, though, and so when The Platform 2 surreptitiously landed on Netflix last October there was a profound sentiment of, "Wait, what?"

Most critics weren't shown the film in advance, meaning reviews didn't start dropping until release day - and so it wasn't particularly surprising that it was largely panned by both the press and general viewers alike.

Netflix likely knew this one wouldn't become quite the viral hit that its predecessor was, yet it still posted solid viewing figures regardless, probably enough for the streamer to put a threequel into production in the near-future.

A serious change in creative direction will surely be needed, though, considering the wildly polarising response to the second film.
