10 Recent Movie Sequels That Came Out Of Nowhere

2. The Old Guard 2

Netflix's superhero thriller The Old Guard was a quintessential COVID movie, releasing in the summer of 2020 and becoming one of the streamer's most successful original films while everyone was cooped up at home.

It wasn't particularly good, but it wasn't awful - it just existed, people watched it, and then never thought about it again.

And so many were surprised when, back in May, Netflix dropped the first trailer for The Old Guard 2, less than two months before its July 2nd release date.

While it seemed like the sequel was produced under the cover of night, the truth is that The Old Guard 2 was actually shot in the summer of 2022 - almost a full three years before it finally came out.

Ultimately post-production was held up due to regime changes at Netflix and the need for two weeks of reshoots, which were only finally completed late last year.

And so while to us The Old Guard 2 feels like it blipped into existence out of nowhere, for the people making it it spent one hell of a long time in the oven.

It's a shame that it was so thoroughly panned, though that didn't stop it posting strong viewing figures on the streamer regardless. The Old Guard 3, then? Probably.
