9. The Exterior Mansion Shots - Knives Out
Though Rian Johnson's fantastic Knives Out cost only a fraction of Endgame's budget - a totally reasonable $40 million - the mostly-practical production nevertheless employed some sneaky VFX trickery in order for Johnson to achieve exactly the visual style he desired.
There are many exterior shots of the Thrombey mansion featured throughout the film, and though not one of them suggests even the faintest hint of digital trickery, numerous night shots were actually cleverly fabricated in post-production.
Cinematographer Steve Yedlin confirmed on Twitter that in order to achieve the film's painterly, "impressionistic" night-time exteriors, day and night shots of the mansion were composited together, combining the desired lighting elements from each for a new final shot.
Better still, Yedlin did the compositing work himself on his laptop, yet looking at the final result, you'd simply assume it was the gorgeously natural work of an excellent cinematographer. Incredible.
