9. Awkwafina Fights Crime - Renfield

Avatar The Way Of Water
Universal

Renfield is half a good movie about its titular lackey (Nicholas Hoult) attempting to break away from his abusive boss, Count Dracula (Nicolas Cage), and half a dud movie about a surly traffic cop, Rebecca Quincy (Awkwafina), who attempts to take down a crime syndicate operating in New Orleans.

Awkwafina certainly gives a decent enough performance in the role, but did anyone come to the Nicolas Cage Dracula Movie to sit through countless Cage-free scenes where Rebecca deals with obnoxious mobster Teddy Lobo (Ben Schwartz)?

When you factor in that Rebecca additionally has her own trauma related to her father's death, and her sister ends up being hurriedly dragged into the mayhem near the end, it just feels like too much of a distraction from the film people actually wanted to see.

The crime aspect of the story doesn't ever gel particularly well with the horror-comedy elements, ensuring that Renfield basically feels like two separate movie scripts which an "ambitious" executive combined into one Frankensteined end-product.
