Any film which takes something like video games as its basis is inevitably going to end up grounded in a particular time and place, and Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World was no exception, even if it is a great deal of fun. Starring Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Chris Evans, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World's central conceit about a young man trying to compete in a battle of the bands contest while taking on the former boyfriends of his love interest crams in the popular culture references from start to finish. Everything from the gaming references to the music and fashion belongs to the era in which the film was made. In the case of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World the aspects which will inevitably date can perhaps be seen as strengths, rather than weaknesses. Wright serves up a slice of nostalgia which fans will no doubt treasure in the years to come.
