Film comedies are experiencing something of a drought right now. Few are coming out and those that do usually seem to bomb.

Well, there was a great one that arrived recently and sadly, barely anyone seemed to watch it - Jason Reitman's Saturday Night. This is a rip-roaring comedic gem and one of the funniest, most purely entertaining movies in recent memory.

A real-time account of the chaotic launch of Saturday Night Live, this movie is beautifully crafted comedic chaos. It's a stressful load of muchness delivering plenty of devastatingly funny gags the whole freaking time and at the end of the story, it emerges as a triumphant hymn to creativity and perseverance, as what would become a touchstone of American pop culture launches against all the odds.

The film also has a ridiculously stacked cast, headlined by The Fabelmans' Gabriel LaBelle on wonderful form and featuring a limitless treasure trove of delicious supporting parts. This includes Willem Dafoe, JK Simmons, Cory Michael Smith's uncanny impersonation of a young Chevy Chase and even Succession's Nicholas Braun in a dual role, playing both Andy Kaufman and Muppet creator Jim Henson, to name but a few.

Regardless of its poor box-office performance, hopefully this will find a wider audience on streaming.
