Blade Runner’s failure at the box office is the stuff of legends. Due to mismarketing and an underwhelming first cut, Ridley Scott's film epically bombed. But over the years, it's regarded as a cinematic masterpiece and arguably Scott's best movie.

So, when visionary filmmaker Denis Villeneuve was hired to direct Blade Runner 2049, fans were excited. Even though there was no guarantee the long-awaited sequel would match its predecessor, the sci-fi fanbase believed Villeneuve could pull it off. The sequel had an excellent cast, stunning visuals, a perfect director, and an intriguing plot. Most impressively, the studio convinced Harrison Ford to return.

When early reviews declared Blade Runner 2049 was 100% worth the wait, we expected droves of loyal fans to flock to the theatres. But nobody showed up, causing the Blade Runner name to be associated with failure once more.

Do you know what's depressing? This masterful follow-up had ZERO competition. The only movies released during this time were Jigsaw, Boo 2! A Madea Halloween, and My Little Pony: The Movie.

That's what Blade Runner 2049 had to compete against... and it still lost.
