10 Recent Movies That Reignited A Dying Franchise
7. Saw X
When a franchise has been going on for as long as Saw has, things are bound to get a little stale and predictable. Particularly at the rate the Saw movies came out, with a film a year from 2004 to 2010, and the quality declining rapidly.
There was an attempt at a shakeup with both Jigsaw in 2017 and Spiral: From the Book of Saw in 2021, but neither sparked anything new in the franchise. There was nothing to be truly excited about with those two, but Saw X was different.
There was no real reason for audiences to believe that this would represent a turning point for the 20-year-old franchise. Rarely is the 10th instalment in a series anywhere near the best, and prequels tend to be hit-and-miss at the best of times. However, bringing back Tobin Bell and returning to John Kramer's story after the events of the first film was just what was needed.
This allowed for a deeper story, and exploration of both Kramer and Amanda Young (Shawnee Smith). Though plans for Saw XI may have stalled recently, there can be little doubt that a follow-up will be coming at some point, most likely continuing what Saw X started in fleshing out its characters rather than relying solely on gruesome traps.
