Even though John Wick spin-off Ballerina wasn't the disaster that many pre-release reports suggested it might be, it was nevertheless a disappointing pedestrian "expansion" of the Wick universe, which did only the bare minimum to serve its killer cast.

Ana de Armas certainly gives it her all in the action stakes, but on a narrative and character level, there's desperately little for her here.

She's not the only Oscar nominee to get the short shrift, though, as there's also Catalina Sandino Moreno in the role of an ultimately throwaway supporting villain, and Oscar winner Angelica Huston, who briefly reprises her role as the leader of the Ruska Roma.

Ian McShane also shows up for a few cursory scenes, while the late, great Lance Reddick gets virtually nothing to do during his brief screen time.

Of the O.G. Wick clan, it's Keanu Reeves who is probably best-utilised here, even if he's ultimately something of a fan-serving prop to try and further "legitimise" this spin-off.

Probably the most blatant squanderings of acting talent here, though, are Gabriel Byrne, who is given a villain role so wafer-thin nobody could blame him for sleepwalking through it, and Norman Reedus, whose part is so tossed-off it feels like it was hastily added in reshoots.

There's so much talent here for a kickass, ultra-dramatic action film, and yet outside of its well-crafted set-pieces, there's nothing that actually demands their skills.
