7. The Life of Chuck
The Life of Chuck is the latest film from the great Mike Flanagan, yet you'd barely know it considering how listlessly it was dumped into cinemas by Neon back in June.
Flanagan's adaptation of Stephen King's 2020 novella of the same name enjoyed a rapturous premiere at last year's Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the coveted People's Choice Award - a reliable indicator that a film will go on to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination.
In fact, if The Life of Chuck isn't nominated for Best Picture, it'll be the first People's Choice Award winner since 2011's Where Do We Go Now? to miss out, and yet, considering how little promotion it's received despite strong reviews, that outcome sadly seems increasingly likely.
The fantasy drama finally began a limited rollout in June, yet its modest expansion into barely 1,000 U.S. cinemas netted it just $10 million - a poor result for any film apparently courting major awards.
Yet it also seems like Neon didn't really know what to do with it - its premise isn't easily marketable and many of the more prominent actors aren't in the film for long, so the distributor basically just gave up trying.
Sad as it is to say, The Life of Chuck seems destined to be forgotten long before next year's Oscar ceremony.
