10 Recent Movies That Were Sent Out To Die
3. Magazine Dreams
Now, it isn't remotely surprising that Magazine Dreams was sent into the content abyss, because though it premiered to strong reviews at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, two months later star Jonathan Majors was accused of assaulting his former girlfriend.
The accusation and ensuing court trial led distributor Searchlight Pictures to abandon their plans to give the film a major release and launch an awards campaign for Majors, whose performance many considered worthy of a Best Actor Oscar nomination.
By early 2024, Searchlight returned the rights to the filmmakers, and later that year domestic rights were acquired by Briarcliff Entertainment - a label that's gained a rep for picking up "difficult" movies, such as Donald Trump biopic The Apprentice.
Magazine Dreams finally landed in 815 U.S. cinemas back in March, grossing just $1.2 million before being quickly and quietly sent to streaming, where it's already been largely forgotten.
It's a sad outcome for the cast and crew who clearly worked so hard on it, but also a totally unsurprising and understandable result for a film starring someone convicted of assault and harassment.
