10 Scariest Mad Scientists In Horror Movies
4. Dr. Moreau - The Island Of Dr. Moreau
In another HG Wells' adaptation, The Island of Dr. Moreau, a shipwrecked man called Douglas finds himself on a subcontinental land ruled by an eccentric scientist. Douglas assumes that Moreau is transforming humans into animal hybrids but eventually discovers the disgraced vivisectionist is intersplicing genes to make animals more human-like.
Even though Moreau's experiments are regarded as abominable by the scientific community, the character was depicted as an altruistic man in the original novel. The same, however, cannot be said about his film counterpart.
Marlon Brando, who plays the titular character, was infamous for his confrontational manner and habit of making major changes to his role on a whim. And this is most clear in this movie since Brando crafted one of the oddest characters in cinema. When you see the deranged doctor draped in a mumu, wearing a bucket on his head, or talking to the world's smallest man (which Brando forced into the movie), Moreau's whole 'changing animals into humans' schtick doesn't seem that strange by comparison. Even though Moreau could've been portrayed as noble and dignified, this incarnation is as mad as a hundred hatters.
