10 Sci-Fi Films To Be Genuinely Excited About In 2016

8. Star Trek Beyond

Release Date: July 22, 2016 The thirteenth film in the franchise and the third part of the J.J. Abrams reboot, Star Trek Beyond will follow Chris Pine€™s Captain James T. Kirk as his ship comes under attack from an unknown alien force. The USS Enterprise is destroyed and the crew stranded on a new planet where they must defend themselves against a ruthless new enemy whilst trying to engineer their escape. Abrams, unable to take on the project as a director due to conflicts with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, was content to produce Beyond, handing over the reins to Justin Lin who will direct a revised screenplay written by Doug Jung and Scotty actor Simon Pegg. In fact, rewrite may be the wrong the word, considering Pegg admitted that neither he nor Jung bothered to read the original script and just got straight to work on writing a €œmore inclusive€ film, as instructed by Paramount:
" had a script that wasn't really working for them. I think the studio was worried that it might have been a little bit too Star Trek-y. make a western or a thriller or a heist movie, then populate that with Star Trek characters so it's more inclusive to an audience that might be a little bit reticent.€
Hiring the director of three Fast and Furious films is a big hint at the direction the studio wanted to go with Beyond, thought it seems like a good move at this stage €“ Into Darkness didn€™t exactly boldly take us where no man has gone before. With Idris Elba and Kingsman: The Secret Service€™s Sofia Boutella joining the cast, Star Trek Beyond could be the surprise smash of the year.

Phil still hasn't got round to writing a profile yet, as he has an unhealthy amount of box sets on the go.
