10 Sci-Fi Movie Fates Worse Than Death
2. Becoming A Victim Of The Pax - Serenity
Firefly was one of the best sci-fi series ever made, but it was unfortunately canceled before it had the chance to complete its first season. The fans went to war and managed to get a film made in 2005. Serenity tied up some of the stories from the show, offering Browncoats a little bit of closure.
One of the key elements of the show were the Reavers, a group of people who went to the edge of space and went mad. The Reavers were a group of cannibals who terrorized the people of the outer worlds, though little was known about them.
The inner planets denied their existence, and as Serenity revealed, there was a good reason for that. A few years earlier, the Alliance called for people to colonize a planet called Miranda, but the terraforming didn't take, and the colony was lost. At least, that's what they told people.
In reality, the Alliance tried to control aggression in the populace by injecting G-23 Paxilon Hydrochlorate or "Pax" into the atmosphere. It ended conflict for the vast majority of people who simply stopped doing anything to the point of dying where they sat.
A small portion of the population had an opposite reaction, turning into Reavers. The drugs robbed them of their humanity and turned them into monsters who, had they been able to think clear thoughts, would have envied the dead.
