10 Sci-Fi Movie Moments That Pissed Off Fans
3. A CGI Monster - The Thing (2011)
John Carpenter's The Thing is an absolute masterpiece of a film in terms of building tension and suspense, due mainly to the constant paranoia and uncertainty of not knowing which one of the crew is infected at any given time.
It's also probably the most famous example of body horror in action, with a tenth of the film's $15 million budget going on Rob Bottin's practical effects all in. The results are well worth it however, with all of the disgusting transformations and shapes the Thing takes helping the film gain its infamous reputation.
It's probably fair to say expectations weren't too high for the 2011 prequel to The Thing, but the very least an audience would have expected to see was a film that was faithful to the original's practical effects and true body horror.
Instead, what they got was a film stacked with as much CGI and as little practical effects as possible. It's clear that the decision to go overboard with the CGI was a financially motivated one, but it just looks so cheap and outdated even for the time and was probably the thing more than anything else that stuck the final nail in this film's coffin.
