10 Sci-Fi Movies Everyone Remembers For One Scene
7. Gravity - Goodbye Kowalski
Movies that kill off their stars early on usually inspire a fair amount of backlash from their audience, and Gravity was no exception.
The actual reasoning behind the backlash was a little difference in Gravity's case, though. While watching heartthrob George Clooney meet his end is never an easy thing to do, the science behind his death was laughably wonky.
While tethered to fellow astronaut Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock), Clooney's Kowalski begins drifting off into space. Instead of dragging Stone with him, he untethers himself and floats away to his noble death.
The issue with the scene is that the science is pretty obviously off. Given that the pair were in a vacuum, Stone simply had to tug gently on the tether to bring Kowalski safely back toward her, meaning that his sacrifice was entirely pointless. The scene has since become infamous, and the movie's reputation also suffered as a result.
Besides, even if the science hadn't been a steaming pile of nonsense, this scene still would have defined the movie, as it serves as the emotional epicentre of the entire narrative.
