10 Seemingly Brilliant Movie Casting Choices Which Ultimately Fell Flat

3. Matthew McConaughey As The Man In Black - The Dark Tower

After Matthew McConaughey's career-altering 2013, which saw him star in Dallas Buyers Club and steal the show in The Wolf of Wall Street, the Academy Award winner quickly became one of the most sought after performers in Hollywood.

That's why, a few years later, it wasn't too surprising to hear that he'd been cast opposite Idris Elba's Roland Deschain as The Man in Black in the upcoming film adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower novel series.

Walter Padick needed to be a slick, ruthless entity and McConaughey seemed like the perfect fit going into the project.

However, his eventual performance in The Dark Tower (2017) left most people scratching their heads at just how an actor tailor made for the role had managed to drop the ball quite so catastrophically. In the end, what could have been a menacing and hypnotising display soon devolved into nothing more than a bland two dimensional villain with a bad haircut.

McConaughey is still undoubtedly one of the finest thespians in the world on his day, but his lacklustre appearances in films like The Dark Tower and Serenity (2019) have definitely hurt his stock in recent years.
