10 Sequels That Were Cancelled Due To Box Office Flops

Of all the movies on this list, this is the one that really should've happened. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo turned out great, after all, thanks to David Fincher's peerless direction and Rooney Mara's performance at its centre; on that basis alone, it seemed inevitable that Sony would commit to making all three movies.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo under-performed at the box office, though; it brought just $232 million on a budget of $90 million, and Sony had expected at least double that. The two sequel films, which Fincher originally planned to shoot back-to-back, were suddenly on extended hiatus... and then nothing.

During the Sony Leaks (remember those?), it later emerged that Mara had contacted studio boss Amy Pascal via email in an attempt to find out what was happening with The Girl Who Played with Fire. "I'm writing because I wanted to ask you about the Dragon Tattoo sequels," she wrote. "Logic tells me they are not ever happening, as it's been almost 3 years since it came out."

Pascal responded to Mara and arranged a meeting to discuss the sequel, but later cancelled. In the wake of the leaks, Pascal was removed from her position as studio head, and with that any chance of these sequels died with her departure.

There has been recent talk of a reboot, which could amount to something, but as far as the Fincher/Mara side of the franchise is concerned, it's certainly over.
