10 Shameless Movie Rip-Offs That Totally Sucked

5. Sleepaway Camp (Friday the 13th)

And for a little diversity, here's an instance of Hollywood plagiarising itself; 1980's Friday the 13th made the idea of going away to summer camp seem absolutely terrifying to an entire generation of cinemagoers, and if the senseless glut of sequels that followed were not unoriginal enough, we got Sleepaway Camp, a suspiciously similar concept that even has the same kind of poster, for Christ's sake! While it's just following the trend of the time - as just about every horror film from the 80s had a knife-wielding manic of some kind - this one feels all the less original because it's set at a camp, and deals with a very similar identity crisis, in that everything is not as it seems, and it's all leading to a devilish plot twist. While Sleepaway Camp's climactic twist - that the killer is actually a transvestite who has been hiding in plain sight the entire time - is heralded as one of the best in the genre, it does little to mask the fact that this is a mind-meltingly unimaginative film that just so happens to have a relatively amusing twist at the end. Without the twist, nobody would ever, ever talk about this film again.
