10 Shocking Movie Deaths That Came Out Of NOWHERE
9. Cache - Majid
The great Austrian director Michael Haneke is an absolute master at making films that'll mess you the hell up. Cache, which tells the story of an affluent French family being haunted by surveillance tapes that keep being placed on their doorstep, isn't quite as full-on or gruesome as some of his other movies, but you better believe the shocks are still there. These include one of the best surprise movie deaths of the 2000s.
Cache never actually reveals for certain who is sending the tapes, but one of the suspects earlier on is Majid (Maurice Benichou), a man who has a history with protagonist Georges (Daniel Auteuil). Georges' parents were planning to adopt Majid as a child, but Georges told a lie and got Majid sent away, thus dooming Majid to a life of hardship.
Late in the film, Majid summons Georges to his apartment and, as an act of psychological torment, kills himself right in front of Georges. As both a startling death scene that happens without any warning and as an ingenious way to symbolize guilt and trauma, this is an absolute masterclass in how to pull off a surprise death.
