3. You Don't Find New York Ripper Offensive

The films of The Italian Godfather of Gore - Lucio Fulci, have been appreciated by sick movie fans for decades. Films like Zombie Flesh Eaters and The Beyond are true cult classics with a high ick factor. Fulci showed us that he was an adept director of Gialli in the 1970s with films like Don't Torture a Duckling and Lizard in a Woman's Skin, but somehow in the early 1980s, as the Giallo cycle was wearing thin, Fulci made New York Ripper - a Giallo/slasher hybrid. I have read the work of many critics who deal with marginalised cinema, and I have NEVER read any good comments about New York Ripper. Every critic thinks it is sleazy, trashy, deeply offensive misogynist fare from Fulci. It could be one of the most despised films ever. But lovers of sick cinema can find plenty of perverse thrills in New York Ripper.. First, it is exceptionally sleazy and misogynist to the points where it becomes frankly comedic. Just how many crotch stabbings can you fit into a movie before it becomes nonsensical? The woman pervert masturbating to a live sex show and then having toe sex with a teenage boy just exists to be an hilarious nymphomaniac with not much point to her being in the film other than being a vessel of sleaze for Fulci. The Donald duck voiced killer taunts the police over the phone - this adds a surreal menace to the film. Annoying? Yes, but quite bizarre, in a good way. The killer slicing up the detective's young prostitute girlfriend is so sick, viewers want to wash their eyeballs. In fact, the whole affair makes the viewer feel scuzzy and degenerate. But isn't that how good sick films should make you feel? True sick movie fans can roll with the flow of New York Ripper and they can happily watch it knowing that they are watching a demented, perverted, sleaze classic and they can enjoy every last minute of it.
