There is no place as wintery or isolated as a research base Antarctica. This was a lesson that the unfortunate characters in horror legend John Carpenter’s The Thing learned the hard way.

The plot follows a group of researchers as they become terrorised by a shape-shifting alien lifeform that’s been inadvertently released from its icy prison. The creature can perfectly imitate the appearance of any living creature, and by taking the form of its victims it’s able to infiltrate the group to pick them off one at a time.

Paranoia soon sets in as the survivors have no way of knowing who to trust as any one of them could be the alien in disguise. The result is a tense and visceral body horror experience that doesn’t disappoint.

With nothing but hundreds of miles of snow and ice separating the researchers from any form of help or safety, they are completely cut off from the rest of the world and are at the mercy of the creature.

The wintery atmosphere is only one aspect of The Thing’s greatness. Excellent direction, sickening practical effects, and riveting performances are all reasons why The Thing is widely adored.
