4. Coraline (2009)
Coraline is a 2009 American stop-motion fantasy film based on Neil Gaiman's 2002 novel of the same name. When Coraline Jones moves into the Pink Palace with her neglectful parents she is quick to explore and meet her new neighbours. But it's the mysterious little door in her apartment that interests her the most. One day when no one is looking she unlocks the strange entrance way and climbs inside the tunnel on the other side. When she pops out the other end she finds a seemingly perfect alternate version of her own life with perfect parents who provide everything she could ever wish for. But as is usually the case in a Neil Gaiman story everything is not as it seems and when Coraline starts to suspect as much the supposedly perfect family slowly begins to turn nasty. Gaiman is a fantastic fairy tale writer as evidenced by his work on adult comics. His style translates perfectly to children's fiction and in the case of Coraline it is almost a perfect page to screen interpretation. In fact if you're kids are anything like my niece then they'll want to watch this over and over again.
