The Yuuzhan Vong are one of the few species in Star Wars Canon or Legends that originates from outside the galaxy. They are a terrifying humanoid species and religious zealots who despise technology and glorify pain to the point of masochism.

The Yuuzhan Vong invaded the Star Wars galaxy after the fall of the Empire and during the reign of the New Republic. They were the first true challenge to the survival of the newly formed government. And they were an extremely formidable foe.

The Yuuzhan Vong were much larger and heavier than an average human and were known to augment their body with a unique form of biotechnology. They had a mistrust of mechanical tech so that even their ships were biological. They also were invisible to the Force which made them all the more dangerous.

Although the Yuuzhan Vong waited until the fall of the Empire to invade they had been infiltrating the galaxy for decades. Advance scouts of the Yuuzhan Vong had been exploring systems since the early days of the Clone Wars.

The Yuuzhan Vong began staging an invasion force on the edge of the galaxy. They engaged in skirmishes with both the Chiss and the Mandalorians.

At some point, Emperor Palpatine learned of the extragalactic invaders. Much of the Empire's military build-up was in preparation for invasion by the Yuuzhan Vong. Palpatine even sent scouts into the unknown regions to gather information on the threat.

So, the Yuuzhan Vong were scary enough that they even made Palpatine nervous. This is not a species you want to encounter in the unknown regions of space.
