10 Status Updates On Iconic Horror Franchises
2. A Nightmare On Elm Street
Last Film Entry: A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)
What's going on? After Robert Englund made his last onscreen appearance as Freddy Krueger in 2003's Freddy vs. Jason, New Line attempted to start the series anew for modern audiences with the 2010 remake. Despite dropping the camp that had once pervaded a handful of the sequels in favor of trying to make Freddy scary again, the remake wasn't warmly embraced by critics or fans, sending everyone involved back to the drawing board to figure out what's next for the series.
It's taken several years, but The Wrap reported this past August that New Line is finally moving forward on yet another fresh take on the series. Considering that New Line is described as the house that Freddy built, there's no way that the character is going to permanently stay down and this most recent movement proves that.
While Freddy's iconic personality was - and still is - very much linked to Englund's performance in the eyes of many, those still hoping for his return to the role should abandon such thoughts now that the actor just recently shot down any such possibility.
And though some fans believe the series should be put to rest without him and others maintain open minds about what could come next, the fact remains that a new Nightmare is coming and it doesn't hurt to keep our fingers crossed that it turns out far better than the first remake attempt.
