10 Stupid Comic Book Movie Deaths That Should Never Have Happened
5. Mystique (Dark Phoenix)
Dark Phoenix, while not the last hurrah of the Fox-helmed X-Men movies, was the last film in the franchise for the main cast and sat squarely under the shadow of the Fox-Disney merger. As such, it was clear that the only people giving their all to the film were the craft services caterers and Michael Fassbender. The man is a consummate professional, after all.
It appears this cloud of laziness settled into the writers room as well, seeing as the entire plot jumps from one plot contrivance to another. One of the most prominent and bizarre moments in the film was when Jean, in a fit of confused rage, accidentally impales Mystique into a giant splinter and kills her. This sets in motion the rest of the movie, much to the audience's chagrin.
While it was no secret that Jennifer Lawrence wanted out of the X-Men franchise in a big way, killing off such a prominent character in such a lame and anti-climactic manner felt disrespectful to everyone involved. It was only made more irrelevant by the big emotional setpiece at the end being devoted to Jean instead of Mystique. It also completely messes up the franchise continuity, but Fox producers had long since stopped pretending to care about such things.
