The Comic Book Moment: After seven issues and countless tie-ins of conflict, Civil War comes to a head in a massive battle that only ends when Captain America realises the danger of what he's doing and turns himself into the authorities, essentially willfully forsaking the war. Of course, things continue in the follow-up comic, The Death Of Captain America, where (spoiler) Cap is killed by Crossbones and a brain-washed Sharon Carter and the story takes a turn so bonkers no movie would ever touch it.

The Movie Version: In truth the movie version of Civil War played pretty free and loose with the source material, taking the basic idea of Captain America and Iron Man disagreeing over superhero registration and little else, but what it did do is culminate in a similar intense fight that had Cap gain the upper hand before throwing down his shield in disgust for what he'd become. However, while it had similar iconography, there were some major changes; it's motivated by and features Bucky and, crucially, instead of handing himself in, at the climax Steve Rogers forsakes the Captain America name, goes underground and saves the imprisoned members of Team Cap.

Did The Change Work? Within the parameters of the existing MCU, with the specific, slighter cast of characters than the comics circa 2006 and a defined future ahead, this was best, high-stakes Civil War we could have expected and the ending was a highlight. Aside from being emotionally torturous, it pays off Steve and Tony's arcs of not only this movie, but the MCU so far.
