5. Jeffrey Goines - Twelve Monkeys (1995)
"There's no right, there's no wrong, there's only popular opinion!" Brad Pitt often gets accused of not testing himself in the roles he picks, or relying too much on his impossible good looks to get by without too much effort on screen. But Twelve Monkeys is one of those performances that established him as a fine actor before he became part of a celebrity couple. There's something quite endearing about Jeffrey Goines in Twelve Monkeys: he is quite funny with his eyes squinting all over the place and his hands waving everywhere but, because he is crucial to the story, he has a real impact on the audience. Pitt's performance is brilliant, channeling a One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest intensity and energy, and offering a slightly comical, but never clownish performance to balance Bruce Willis' more serious role. He steals focus from Willis' hero undoubtedly, and watching now, it's hard to resist the feeling that Brad Pitt should be making more films like this now.
