10 Terrible Horror Movies That Are Actually Awesome

1. Halloween & Halloween II (2007/2009)

Halloween Rob Zombie
Dimension Films

The Halloween franchise has always been a divisive beast, complete with films often considered to be the best slashers ever made and the worst, but it's never received a more mixed reception from both audiences and critics than when Rob Zombie decided to add his own flare to the story.

Zombie's two-film retelling of Michael Myers' origins and eventual growth into an unstoppable killing machine gets a lot wrong, especially in his decision to make the killer a moody kid, which takes a lot of the mystery out, but both films are far better than they've ever been given credit for.

Experimental and more psychological than any other Halloween film, Zombie's take on Myers' story is existential and incredibly bleak, daring to explore Myers and his family with more depth than the franchise had tried before or since.

If that doesn't work for you -- which is fair, considering how much of an acquired taste Zombie is as filmmaker -- there's also plenty of enjoyment to be found in the kills, which are some of the most horrific and bloodsoaked of any slasher film you're likely to find.

Yes, it has some inescapable flaws, but taken on their own merits, Rob Zombie's Halloween and Halloween II are simply one of a kind, and worth being dug back up.
