Green Lantern has become a byword for how not to make a superhero movie, and Ryan Reynolds still can't seem to stop putting it down whenever he gets the opportunity. There are many, many things wrong with the infamous box office dud, and it started at the very top.
Something like Green Lantern requires a director with an eye for the fantastical, someone that can lean into the absurdity of the premise without veering too far into self-parody, and prove capable of balancing the wild tonal shifts that comes with a standard origin story involving an all-powerful ring that turns the wearer into a member of intergalactic law enforcement. Green Lantern would have stood a much better chance of succeeding if someone with a bit of panache was calling the shots as opposed to a workmanlike journeyman that was capable of getting the movie in on time and on budget, which are the very minimum requirements for something like this.
