10 Terrible Remakes Of Awesome Movies That Almost Happened

5. The Harder They Come

With The Harder They Come it was not a big Hollywood studio that was wanting to remake/ruin the 1972 Jamaican cult classic. It was actually the daughter of the late director of the original (Perry Heznell) who fancied giving it the old college try. The original film made reggae singer Jimmy Cliff a big star, but would a remake work in the 2010's? Probably not. Reggae, while it obviously still has its fans, has had its day in the sun. The Harder They Come played a significant role in popularising the music genre around the world but that was a long time ago now. The remake was set to begin filming sometime in 2013 but nothing has been heard of it since. It's probably best that the filming didn't go ahead. While you have to respect the fact that the director's daughter wanted to pay tribute to her father, the original is timeless and was, more importantly, timely. It's hard to see how The Harder They Come could be updated and work for today's audience (although it was adapted into a successful stage version in the mid-2000's).
