Jump-scares gets a bad rap, since they're hard to pull them off without coming across as forced. But if this scare tactic is executed right, it can be the most memorable part of a movie.

Few features demonstrate this fact better than Insidious. In the scene in question, parents Josh and Renai have become concerned for their son, Dalton, who's fallen into a coma. While Josh speaks to his mother about Dalton's condition, she mentions a nightmare she had of a red-faced demon called The Man with the Fire in His Face.

As she looks up, she sees the very same demonic figure snarling behind Josh. Because the scene takes place in midday in a brightly lit room, you're not expecting a jump-scare, making this shot even more effective. Even though most of the entity's face is obscured by Josh's head, this shot is ingrained in viewers' memory banks forever. Although we see more of the devilish creature later, his first appearance is more impactful, since it's completely out of the blue

Despite the fact there isn't a single clear shot of The Man with the Fire in His Face, it hasn't stopped him from becoming a horror icon.
