10 Terrifying Horror Movies You’ve Probably Never Seen
3. Possum (2018)
Long before his Mission: Impossible days, Sean Harris was something of a sleeper talent on the UK indie scene. And, fresh from an international tête-à-tête with Tom Cruise, he returned to it on fine form in psychological horror Possum.
Harris stars as disgraced children's puppeteer Philip Connell who has to return to his dilapidated home in Norfolk and finally reckon with the trauma he suffered there many years before.
Everything about Possum feels weighed down with misery and horror, from the grey and earth-toned palette, to the jarring mix of natural and low-key lighting, to Harris's deeply fragile and nuanced performance. Director Matthew Holness never, however, lets us settle into the groove of the film, turning all of these elements inside out when it suits in order to ramp up the terror.
The most horrifying element of all, though, comes in the form of the puppet Philip carries around in a holdall. When he really loses control, its long, spidery tendrils and human head turn it from spooky curiosity to high-grade nightmare fuel.
That the film has largely gone unnoticed, despite its star power, is hardly surprising given it only opened at seven cinemas in the UK and has since been damned to the depths of Prime Video.
